Hello February! It’s finally the month of the Oscars, the end of my MA thesis and the start of my new semester at university. Keep reading for my thoughts on the previous month and the one that has just begun.
I’ve decided I really don’t like January. It’s cold and grey and rainy, and although I do enjoy wearing my bright pink raincoat, I’m still longingly thinking of Summer already. But the warmer months are still a long time away, so let’s focus on February first!
Even though January is supposed to be the month of new beginnings, epic changes and working hard on those New Year’s Resolutions, it still feels as if everything is standing still. No epic changes have taken place so far, although we did put up some new coat hangers in the hallway which I am very pleased with, but nothing life-changing.
Some exciting things that did happen include the International Film Festival Rotterdam, where we went to see Claire Denis’ High Life. A little film review will be up on my Instagram account very very soon, so head over there if you’re interested in weird French cinema. Speaking of cinema, I talked to documentary maker Marina Meijer for another installment of my interview series for Cineville which was published both over there and on Almost Famous Writer. I also watched a lot of movies in January (what else can you do when it’s cold and raining outside?) and my absolute favourite release is The Wife, starring Glenn Close. Her performance, for which she recently won a Golden Globe, was incredible and so was her beautiful acceptance speech.
That being said, February does bring some change. My semester is starting again, which means I’ll be taking classes at Leiden University again and this time around the courses are a bit more challenging, which I’m actually really excited about. Then February will be the month I will FINALLY finish my MA thesis for my first master program, which will definitely be one of the highlights of 2019 and I’m already looking forward to it. Finally, February is Merlijn’s birthday month so of course I already have presents in matching wrapping paper all ready to go.
So what can you expect on Almost Famous Writer in February? As the Oscars are rapidly approaching (Sunday February 24, mark your calendars) and thus some Oscar-conspiracy theories and my thoughts on the winners will be coming your way in the upcoming weeks. I’ve also been reading a lot so at least one book review will make its way to you during this month. Happy February!
